Intro into Keycloak

In this article series, we will take a hands-on approach to learn how to integrate Keycloak with Spring Boot. This introductory post goes through why we need an Identity Manager, and key features, applications and architecture of Keycloak. We also have a short exercise to try out creating a Keycloak Springboot instance, and generating a realm file.

What is Keycloak

Keycloak is an open-source identity and access management solution developed by Red Hat. It provides a centralized platform for managing user authentication, authorization, and other security features across multiple applications andservices. Keycloak simplifies the process of securing applications by handling common security tasks such as user authentication, user management, and authorization, so developers can focus on building their application functionality.

Key Features of Keycloak

  • Single Sign-On (SSO): Keycloak supports SSO, allowing users to log in once and gain access to multiple applications without needing to log in again. This is useful for organizations with multiple applications that need a consistent authentication mechanism.
  • Identity Brokering and Social Login: Keycloak can integrate with external identity providers, such as social login platforms (e.g., Google, Facebook, GitHub) and enterprise identity providers (e.g., LDAP, SAML, OpenID Connect).
  • User Federation: Keycloak allows integration with existing user directories such as LDAP or Active Directory. This means that Keycloak can act as a bridge between an application and an existing user store.

How Keycloak Works

  • Authentication Flow: When a user tries to access a protected resource, they are redirected to Keycloak for authentication. Keycloak handles the login, generates a token for the user, and then redirects them back to the application with this token. The application can then use the token to identify and authorize the user.
  • Identity Providers: Keycloak can act as an identity broker, allowing users to log in via external identity providers such as Google, Facebook, or any OAuth2, OpenID Connect, or SAML 2.0-based provider.
  • Token-Based Security: After authenticating a user, Keycloak issues tokens such as Access Tokens and ID Tokens (in the case of OpenID Connect). These tokens contain information about the user and their roles and can be used by applications to authorize access to resources.

  • Roles: Define permissions that users have within the system.
  • Groups: Used to group users together for easier role and permission management.

Hands-On Exercise

In this exercise we look at spinning up a sample Spring Boot Keycloak implementation, and using that to generate a Keycloak realm file.

  1. Clone this repository: git clone <https://github.com/hendisantika/spring-boot-keycloak-sample3.git
  2. Navigate to the folder: cd spring-boot-keycloak-sample3
  3. Run docker compose: docker compose up
  4. Run the application: mvn clean spring-boot:run
  5. Import keycloak realm file PowerRanger.json
  6. Open Postman App
  7. Import Postman Collection file
